Center description

The Indian Spinal Injuries Centre has been set up under MOU between the Government of India and Italy. San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, implemented the proposal on behalf of Italian Government. Today it is a model institution comparable to the best in the world.The philosophy and guiding principle of ISIC is to provide medical treatment to everybody irrespective of their paying capability. This is a hospital with heart and soul - a place that aims to provide world class standards personalized health care and helps its patients feel “the joy of living through”. It is registered under Society Registration Act and Founder Chairman was Mr. H.C. Sarin. Currently its Chairman is Major HPS Ahluwalia who is a war veteran of Indo-Pak war of 1965 and scaled Mount Everest on May 29, 1965. Hospital was started in 1996 and is today a  178 bedded super specialty, tertiary care hospital focusing mainly on spine, orthopaedics, rheumatology, sports medicine and joint replacement, neuro-sciences. It has a world class rehabilitation centre including hydrotherapy. It also has cardiology, general medicine, general surgery as support services. It has the latest state-of-the-art diagnostics and surgical equipment and a highly qualified team of doctors, surgeons, physiotherapists, who have all been trained at the world's best institutions. ISIC has become a major referral centre. Its patients come not only from across India, but from all over the world.

ISIC has a 8 bedded emergency department, 18 bedded ICU and 5 state-of-the-art operation theatres for conducting various procedures and surgeries. It also runs postgraduate program in orthopaedics, spine and anesthesia. It runs 6 masters courses in occupational therapy (neurology), physiotherapy (musculoskeletal, sports, cardiopulmonary, neurology) as well as prosthetics & orthotics.

ISIC also does pioneering clinical and basic research having done country’s first two human trials on cellular therapy for SCI with approval of Indian Council of Medical Research and monitored by International Steering Committee. It had tie ups with National Institute of Disability & Rehabilitation Research, Ministry of Education, USA for a 4-year research project. Under a joint research project with University of Pittsburgh, a research project for developing a low cost motorized wheelchair suitable for Indian conditions was undertaken. ISIC is also spearheading ASCoN Pilot Project (IDAPP) for ISCOS database.
