Course Overview

This course includes a mandatory pre-course online learning module consisting of self-directed learning, complemented by virtual tutorials, and evidence-based literature, to prepare participants six weeks prior to the face-to-face practical training.

This two-and-a-half day, HANDS-ON event, aims specifically at teaching participants the principles of endoscopic lumbar spine surgery.

A short, but focused session on Day one, will take you step-by-step through the common endoscopic procedures, (Transforaminal discectomy, Interlaminar discectomy, Decompression of the lateral recess and Unilateral laminotomy for bilateral decompression).

Day two focuses on interactive cases discussions, and a basic workshop teaching the handling and orientation you will need for endoscopic surgery.

Day three is unique, as it will be all hands-on training of the above procedures on realistic spine models and navigation. To enhance the learning experience, the participants will again be split into two groups, one doing the procedures while the other benefits from observing, before changing roles.

Learning objectives

After the event, participants will be able to:

1. Diagnose the patient problem and recognize appropriate indications for endoscopic surgery
2. Select the appropriate endoscopic procedure and set up the technology, OR and team
3. Perform the key steps of endoscopic transforaminal and interlaminar approaches
4. Recognize possible complications of endoscopic surgery and how to avoid/manage the

Target Participants

This event is targeted at surgeons with 3 to 10 years of experience in spine surgery, and other specialists, who are interested in learning the basics of endoscopic spine surgery.
