Spine Centers and fellowships

The regional AO Spine Fellowship programs were massively impacted by the pandemic in 2020. Most fellowships had to be postponed or cancelled. The beginning of 2021 does not look much different to the AO Spine Middle East and Northern Africa (AO SMENA) Spine Centers and Fellowships officer Muhammed Assous. At the same time, AO SMENA announced an impressive growth in the number of official Spine Centers in the region to eleven.

"We are doing our best to relocate our fellows to the second half of the year when hopefully the situation will have improved," Assous assures and believes every cloud has a silver lining. "We have state of the art Spine Centers in the region with highly qualified surgeons who are eager to receive fellows and share knowledge with our community."

An opportunity not to be missed

An AO Spine fellowship in the region is an opportunity for surgeons looking to expand their skills. "Among the advantages of doing a fellowship in one of our centers are the lower chances of cancellations—and yes, we are still receiving fellows!—higher chances of scrubbing in, creating a local network, working in the local language, and so on," Assous continues.

To learn more about the advantages of our Fellowships and Spine Centers, AO SMENA is organizing a series of virtual meetings with the Spine Center Directors and their teams, who will present their Centers. "We will discuss the cases and techniques often seen by their fellows and answer any questions you might have," Assous says. "We hope many of you will join these meetings and find out more about the expertise and training opportunities of our Centers!"

Endoscopy is one of the most popular topics in AO Spine training offerings. A fellowship in a Spine Center specializing is this technique will be an important addition to a spine surgeon's experience.
The meetings with the AO SMENA Spine Centers are free, open, and interactive and participants will be able to ask questions. Register here.
