AO Spine Latin America Specimen Courses—Minimally invasive surgery

From February 6-8, 2020 the AO Spine Latin America Specimen Courses—Minimally invasive surgery will take place in Palm Beach (US). It will be the first specimen courses in Latin America focused on minimally invasive spine surgery after the MISS Curriculum launching on May 2019. The training will introduce and expand knowledge for spine surgeons (orthopedist or neurosurgeon) interested in minimally invasive spine surgery. Cristiano Menezes (BR) is the chairperson and the educational advisor is Nestor Taboada (CO). These courses will provide practicing spine surgeons with concise, skills-based training in a range of minimally invasive spinal procedures improving their understanding of technical and operative perspectives. Both courses were designed for three participants per station and with two different levels available.
LEVEL 1: February 6-7, 2020
The level 1 course covers the main topics and basic surgical techniques and it is aimed at surgeons doing open surgery but with little or no MISS experience.
The available workshops include general MISS skills; spinal biopsy and vertebroplasty; interlaminar microscopic lumbar discectomy and thoracic and lumbar percutaneous screws and iliac percutaneous screw.
LEVEL 2: February 7-8, 2020
The level 2 course covers advanced procedures and was developed for surgeons with some experience with microscopes and tubes but not for complex MISS.
The available workshops include:
- Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF)
- Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion (LLIF)
- Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion (OLIF)
- Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF)
