Research Support

Conducting clinical studies can be a challenging and multifaceted task. AO Spine provides specific tools, courses, and e-learning material, including tips and pitfalls, to help members successfully carry out clinical studies. AO Spine Latin America is now offering, exclusively for members in the region, free peer reviews of projects ideas and papers. The peer reviews can help to filter out studies that are poorly conceived, designed or executed. The objective is to assess the quality of project ideas and manuscripts before they are completely executed or submitted for publication.

Project idea review

The peer reviewers will provide their assessments, including ways to improve the research project and scientific methodology, as well as recommendations and identification of potential centers for multicenter studies.

Paper review

The peer reviewers will evaluate whether researchers’ manuscripts are well conceived and written and whether their studies contain flaws in the design or methodology. The results presented will be checked for correct interpretation and for whether all possible interpretations have been considered. Additionally, peer reviewers will ensure that the results are neither too preliminary or too speculative without blocking innovative new research and theories.

According to the AO Spine Latin America Research Officer Marcelo Valacco, research is a tool to enable surgeons to develop projects that improve patient care or advance their careers.

"Scientific findings and discoveries have implications for society,” he said. “The preliminary check by peers can help to decide if a suitable approach has been taken to address the scientific issues involved."
