AOSpine Knowledge Forum Deformity – Consensus AIS Meeting

25. April 2013

During the Global Spine Congress in Hong Kong, the KF Deformity held a productive full day meeting to complete the final process of one of their emerging international research projects. The study is about establishing a consensus on what constitutes optimal surgical care for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). By using a Delphi process, the principal investigator, Dr. Marinus de Kleuver, and his co-authors hope to find consensus from the expert opinions of deformity spine surgeons worldwide.  With these findings, they will help healthcare providers around the world become aware of what consensus-based optimal operative care involves and help to define optimal care in their own regions.

The project was conceived in May 2012, and by June, deformity spine surgeons were recruited and selected through an open call. Fourty-eight spine surgeons (panelists) from five regions of the world (Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, and North America) participated in the study. Over a 6-month period, they provided their expert opinion in three rounds of questionnaires. The questionnaires were completed and returned online via the Internet.

This meeting marked the final round of the Delphi process. It was a face-to-face discussion where half of the panelists were invited to participate and interact with one another. Twenty-two of the 48 panelists attended and represented their regions. Items where there was no consensus were discussed and re-voted on by the panelists. In the later part of the meeting, panelists were given the opportunity to break-out into three small working groups, where they brainstormed and conceptualized future spin-off research projects within the specific stages of surgical care (pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care).

With the additional results gathered from this meeting, Dr. Marinus de Kleuver and his team, hope to publish the results in the near future.

This work will be presented during the North American Spine Society (NASS) 28th Annual Meeting held October 9-12, 2013 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
